WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle progress in the FA Cup, but Marine Academy suffer penalty shoot-out agony

PLYMOUTH Argyle have made it through to the third round of the Women’s FA Cup by beating AFC Stoneham 4-2 at Coach Road on Sunday.

The Pilgrims will now host their National League Southern Premier Division rivals Oxford United on December 10.

Argyle were 2-0 up against Stoneham at half-time on Sunday thanks to goals by Ellie Sara and a stunning half-volley from Jemma Rose.

After the interval they went 4-0 ahead with a strike from a corner by Rosie McDonnell and another strike from Sara.

Stoneham, though, kept going and were rewarded with two goals in the final seven minutes courtesy of Sanni Lucas an Mia Delaney.

However, there was FA Cup disappointment for Marine Academy Plymouth, who went out of the competition on penalties away at Keynsham Town.

Marine Academy had found themselves 3-0 down but they fought back to equalise with strikes by Samantha Drewery and Tallulah Thompson and an own goal.

With neither side able to find a late winner the contest went to penalties, where Keynsham triumphed 8-7 in a nail-biting shoot-out.

In the South West Women’s League Premier Division, Liskeard Athletic, who were struggling with flu in their camp, also produced a good comeback to draw 3-3 away at third-placed Pucklechurch.

The hosts had been 3-1 up at the break, with Jasmine Allen scoring Liskeard’s only goal in the opening 45 minutes. However, after the interval, Allen bagged another to go with one from Grace O’Leary.

In the South West Western Division, Saltash United enjoyed a big 8-0 away win at Middlezoy.

Nicola Champion bagged a hat-trick for the Ashes, with Hayley Ranachan and Olivia Ramsey netting two apiece and Yasmin Franklin also on the scoresheet.

In the Devon Senior Cup, Plympton were knocked out 3-2 by a skilful Exeter City reserve side at Tor Bridge High.

In wet and windy conditions, Exeter went in front after just five minutes with a fine goal from a corner.

But Plympton levelled 10 minutes later when Dionne Igalawuye was brought down by the Exeter goalkeeper and she stepped up to fire home the penalty.

However, Exeter did go 3-1 up before half-time with goals from Lemoni Gouldstone and Chloe Harris.

The visitors looked comfortable without really threatening in the second half but once Charley Putman scored a second for Plympton with five minutes to go, Exeter started panicking.

The hosts pushed for a last-gasp equaliser but could not find one.

The University of Plymouth were also knocked out of the cup. They lost 6-2 at home to Plainmoor, while SB Oak Villa were handed a walkover by city rivals Lakeside Athletic.

The match between Horrabridge Rangers and Elm United was called off just before kick-off due to an unplayable pitch.

In the Devon Women’s League South & West Division, Marjon enjoyed a 3-0 home win over Shaldon. Robyn Hearn, Rose Mason-White and Abigail White scored for the students.

In Cornwall Women’s League Division One, Saltash Borough beat Bude Town 3-1 thanks to two goals from Stacey Gill and one from Molly Gill.
