MARINE Academy Plymouth, Saltash United, Signal Box Oak Villa and Liskeard Athletic all progressed in the Women’s FA Cup at the weekend.
A goal from captain Sam Drewery helped Marine Academy to a 1-0 away win at Helston. They will now host Bishops Lydeard at home in the next round on October 23.
Saltash triumphed 5-2 away at Bodmin thanks to goals from Nicola Champion, Yasmin Franklin, Maddy Leppard, Morgan Friend and Hayley Ranachan. They have been handed a high-profile match against Exeter City in the next round.
Signal Box Oak Villa dug deep to claim a 4-3 away victory at Halwill. Their reward is a long trip to Hampshire to face Eastleigh.
Liskeard will host Stockwood Wanderers in the third round qualifying after they overcame Seaton 5-1. Sam Metters bagged a hat-trick for Athletic, with Lucy Jones and Eve Moore also netting.
In league football, Plymouth Argyle showed good spirit to come from 1-0 down at half-time to beat Gillingham 2-1 at Kimberley Stadium in the FA Women’s National Southern Premier Division.
Argyle started the game well but could not find the breakthrough and in the 36th minute Kara Fordjour had fired Gillingham ahead.
But the Pilgrims came out in positive mood for the second period and midway through the half, Lily Greenslade found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and she calmly fired in her first league goal of the season.
And it got better for Argyle 11 minutes when Beth Ireland found the next from the edge of the box.
The win – Argyle’s second of the season – has moved them out of the relegation zone and up to eighth in the table. They have a tough trip this coming weekend to third-placed Watford.
In the South West Women’s Western League, Activate suffered a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Barnstaple. Wensday Wise scored their only goal.
In the Devon Women’s League, Plympton continued their good start to the season with a 7-0 away victory at Paignton Villa.
Ellie Dalton bagged a hat-trick for Plympton, with Dionne Igalawuye netting two and Evie Hampton and Chelsea Robinson also getting on the scoresheet.
Meanwhile, Lakeside Athletic were beaten 4-0 away at leaders Juventus Devon.
In the Cornwall Women’s League Division One, Saltash Borough went down 2-1 away at Foxhole Stars. Hollie Congo scored Borough’s only goal.
