WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Saltash United and Activate claim away wins

THE weather played havoc with the women’s football programme on Sunday, but Saltash United, Activate and Lakeside Athletic all managed to play.

Saltash United claimed an impressive 3-2 away win at second-placed Feniton in the South West Women’s League Western Division.

The Ashes showed good character to come from behind at half-time to snatch three crucial away points and make up for a 3-1 home defeat by Feniton in January.

Billie Swan scored two of Saltash’s goals, with Beth Mitchell bagging their other.

The Ashes’ win was also a boost to Plymouth Argyle U23’s title hopes as they stay three points ahead of Feniton at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, Saltash United’s development team were handed a walkover by Wadebridge Town in the Cornwall Supplementary Cup.

Elsewhere, Activate took another big step to claiming the Devon Women’s League Western Division title by beating city rivals Lakeside Athletic 17-0 at Marjons.

Activate had the gale-force wind in their favour first half and made an impressive start scoring five goals in the opening 17 minutes.

They led 9-0 at half-time, but, credit to Lakeside, they kept battling hard and created some chances in the second period but just could not take them.

And Activate finished strongly with five goals in the final 15 minutes.

Activate now lead the table by six points, ahead of Torquay United reserves. Those two sides are well clear of the rest of the teams in the division.
