PLYMSTOCK Road Runners’ Carla Haines, Tamar Trotters Bex Ezra and Tavistock AC’s Helen Kula-Przezwanki were among the winners at the 2021 Plymouth Triathlon on Sunday.
The event at Mount Batten was returning for the first time since 2018. The 2019 triathlon had to be called off at short notice due to a storm and then the Covid-19 pandemic put pay to the event in 2020.
But it was back with social distancing and wave starts on Sunday.
There were two competitions – an Olympic standard triathlon, which is a 1,500m swim, a 40k bike ride and a 10k run, and a sprint event, which involves a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5k run.
Haines was first women home and came seventh overall in the standard triathlon with a time of 2:51.43, which was nearly 15 minutes ahead of the next female, who was Katy Yardley, with Sally Elphick third.
William Tyrrell-Moore was first male in the standard event in 2:29.43, with Harry Sampson second in 2:33.57 and over-40 athlete Ben Oman third in 2:38.36.
Ezra was a dominant force in the sprint triathlon. She was fifth overall and first women in 1:26.50. Second female was Charlotte Tilney in 1:32.55, with world masters’ swimming champion Helen Kula-Przezwanki third woman and first over-60 in 1:41.30. Kula-Przezwanki was actually the first over-45 male or female and came ninth overall against people more than half her age.
Dean Crow was the men’s overall sprint winner in 1:17.23. With fellow 40-44 category athlete Andrew Banfield second in 1:21.28 and Richard Ham third in 1:22.26.
