Tavistock’s Lake wins European Aquathlon silver medal in Transylvania

TAVISTOCK athlete Sam Lake claimed another international aquathlon medal at the weekend.

Lake secured a silver in the 40-44 age group at the ETU European Aquathlon Championships which were held in Targu Mures, which is in the Romanian region of Transylvania.

She had also won a European silver last year in Ibiza and a World Aquathlon bronze medal in Denmark.

Lake was only beaten by fellow Brit Tina Wilson in Transylvania. Wilson won in 33:34 minutes, with Lake finishing in 35.31 and Louise Croxson making it an all-British podium by winning bronze in 36.58.

Lake enjoyed a good swim, coming out of the water in second place overall in a time of 14.51 minutes for the 1km swim. She then ran 19.42 minutes for the 5k run.

“It was great race,” said the Tavistock athlete. “The swim was in a lake – out and back – and it was nice and calm but lots of weeds.

“I came out of water in second position overall and held position throughout the run. It was extremely hot (31oC) and a very twisty-turny course. The medal ceremony was held in medieval castle.”
