Pilgrim Flyers youngsters enjoy good start to South West Cyclo-Cross season

PILGRIMS Flyers youngsters enjoyed success at the opening South West Cyclo-Cross Series event of the season at Powderham Castle, near Exeter.

Oliver Allen, Rosie Andrews and Molly Lane all won their respective categories at the Mid-Devon Cycle Club hosted race.

Allen finished as first junior in a highly-competitive senior race that attracted 110 riders.

He was 12th overall, but was more than four minutes ahead of the next junior, who was Mid-Devon’s Tristan Davies.

Andrews took victory in the under-16 girls’ event. She finished more than two minutes ahead of second-placed Connie McLaughlin of Tavistock Wheelers. Taw Velo’s Ellen Webber was third.

Lane’s success came in the under-12 girls’ race. She managed to hold off the tough challenge of Wheal Velocity’s Eva Fox and Taw Velo’s Georgina Mahoney. Tavistock’s Lara Dix was fourth.

In the under-14 boys’ race, Tavistock’s Ewan Dix came second behind Minehead’s Joseph Wright.

Taw Velo’s Ellen Garnsworthy won the under-14 girls’ race, while team-mate Max Standen held off Louis Garnsworthy to take victory in the under-12 boys’ competition.

One and All’s Samuel Medlyn claimed the honours in the under-16 boys’ event, ahead of Taw’s Edward Armstrong and Tavistock’s Joe Dix, who was third.

Arthur Oliver and Ellie Birchall were the under-10 winners, with Tavistock’s Orla White third girl.

Lucas Riches and Lauren Fox triumphed in the under-eight categories, with Pilgrim Flyers’ James Allen third.

The senior race was well won on the day by Hamish Fletcher. Rockin Bikes’ Richard Long was second senior and sixth overall.

Chris Rathbone was second overall and first veteran, ahead of James Williams and Lee Hayward.

Exeter’s Tim Carpenter was first over-50 veteran, while Bridport’s Catriona Ross was first women ahead of Alice Staniford.
