PILGRIM Flyers enjoyed an impressive outing at the opening round of the HSBC UK National Cross Country Mountain Bike Series at Sherwood Pines at the weekend.
The Plymouth club took six youth riders to the top event in Mansfield and claimed three top five placings.
In the junior women’s category, Fiona Barron raced with the leaders all the way and claimed an excellent fourth place finish.
Coming just one place and 32 seconds behind her was Helen Barron, who had to play a solo game of catch-up on the fast and relentless course.
Also among the leading riders at the East Midlands competition were Oli Allen and Rosie Andrews.
Allen finished eighth out of nearly 60 competitors in the youth male race. In a close finish four athletes crossed the line almost together, but Allen was ruled to have been the back of the four, even though he was given the same time as the seventh rider and just a second slower than the fifth and sixth competitors. In the same race, fellow Pilgrim Flyer Alex Whitemore finished 22nd.
Andrews, meanwhile, claimed eighth place in the youth female race.
In the expert men’s race, Rockin’ Bikes’ Richard Long finished ninth and Plymouth Corinthians’ Mark Bryne was 24th.
