Old Techs to keep New Year’s Day tradition going with fixture against Tamar Saracens

OLD Techs will continue their tradition of playing on New Year’s Day with a ‘social match’ against Devon One rivals Tamar Saracens (2.30pm).

For seasons the Weston Mill club always played St Boniface Old Boys on January 1.

However, over the years St Boniface have found it harder and harder to get a team together for the New Year’s Day match and have concentrate their efforts on their Boxing Day game with Saltash.

Tamar Saracens stepped in last year when St Boniface pulled out and have agreed to do the same this time around.

Techs coach Shaun Bedford-Smith, though, said that any rugby players in the area are welcome to join them on Monday.

“There’s an open invite if anyone wants a run out, even if they just want 15 minutes, and a few beers afterwards,” said Bedford-Smith.

“Anyone can come down – there might be some ex-St Boniface lads that want a game.

“Hopefully, we will get a few down and we can have a fun, but competitive game and then go to the bar.

“It is just about keeping the tradition of playing on New Year’s Day going.”
