PLYMOUTH cricket star Heather Knight has spoken of her delight at receiving an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list.
Knight was honoured for captaining England to World Cup glory during the summer.
She said: “Delighted to be named in the New Year’s honours list. 2017 just keeps getting better!
“Would have loved to see the whole team recognised, but chuffed all the same.”
The former Plymstock Cricket Club player added: “When I was a young girl playing cricket for my brother’s team in Plymouth I couldn’t have imagined that one day I would get an honour for captaining my country to a successful World Cup
“It just shows what’s possible, and hopefully young girls pursuing sport today will see that it can take you places. It would be amazing if this honour made one girl think that she fancies picking up a cricket bat.”
