Eight Ivybridge players will start for Devon Under-20s against Somerset

IVYBRIDGE will once again provide the bulk of the Devon under-20s team as they look to restore some pride against Somerset at Okehampton on Sunday in the County Shield (2.30pm).

Eight Bridgers players will start this weekend as Devon aim to bounce back from their disappointing 43-7 opening Pool Four defeat at Dorset & Wiltshire.

Despite that heavy loss at Bournemouth, Devon could still reach the knockout stages of the competition, if they beat Somerset.

“I think the lads are going to react well to that defeat,” said Lewis Paterson, who is helping to coach the Devon team, alongside Gareth Jones and Roger Hutchinson.

“We are going to look at getting a bit of pride restored in the camp. That’s important.

“But this is all development and building blocks for the future. There’s a lot of young under-20s in the squad, who are going to be there next year and some also the year after and so it is about trying to build.”

Ivybridge centre Harry Lakeman is unavailable for Devon as he is required for his club’s important National Colts’ Plate tie against Trojans.

But his club colleagues Damon Akerman, Jordan Smith, Lewis Barnaby, Jake Prophett-O’Neill, Mitch Pinkus, Connor Banks, Ben Collins and Max Coles do start, while Adam Walker is named on the bench.

Also in the Devon Under-20 squad are Plymouth University students Ben Morris, Redford Blaylock and Tom Arnold.

The game is set to be refereed by former Gloucester and England Saxons prop Nick Wood.
