Edwards makes his mark in hammer at City of Plymouth Evening Open Meet

COMMONWEALTH Games hammer thrower Jonathan Edwards produced a season’s best at City of Plymouth’s Evening Open Meeting on Wednesday night.

Welsh international Edwards threw 63.22 metres to move up to 17th in the early UK rankings.

There was also a good performance in the hammer from City of Plymouth’s under-15 girl Kayleigh Weston, who threw 31.10m.

Another impressive field display came from Plymouth’s under-15 athlete Emma Liardet, who managed to send the javelin out to 32.00m, which was not far off her season’s best of 33.20, which ranks her 20th in the UK.

In the same age group, Mia O’Daly continued her consistent throwing in the shot with a mark of 9.99m.

Tavistock’s under-15 athlete Bradley Steven won the high jump with 1.39m, with Erme Valley’s under-13 girl Bronwyn Harris setting a new PB in the same event of 1.36m.

Harris’ Erme Valley team-mate Olivia Travers continued her good form in the under-13 girls 600m, where she is ranked 10th in the UK, with another comfortable victory in a time of 1:52.1.

Plymouth Harriers’ John Cooper won the 3,000m in 9:34.8, while Erme Valley’s Nathan Brown triumphed in the 400m with a time of 52.6 seconds.

City of Plymouth’s under-17 Courtney Weston was fastest women in both the 100m and 300m with times of 13.6 and 44.6 seconds respectively.

The most popular age groups were the panthers (under-eights) and under-11s, with many of them producing impressing performances for their years.
