TAMAR Trotters’ Mike Wilsmore has started 2016 in impressive form.

Wilsmore, who also runs for Bristol & West, clocked a speedy time of three minutes and 48.86 seconds to win the 1,500m at Cardiff Met’s New Year Open Indoor Meet, which incorporated the South West Championships, at the weekend. The time was Wilsmore’s fastest competitively over that distance since 2012.

He was nearly seven seconds in front of the second-placed athletes, who was Aaron Phelps of Stroud.

At the same meet in Wales, Erme Valley Harriers’ Laura Puleston was first South West under-20 in the 400m with a time of 63.47 seconds with Tavistock’s Jade Kinsey third in 65.62. City of Plymouth’s Dean Smith, meanwhile, clocked 1:59.91 for the men’s 800m and Tavistock’s Aimee-Leigh Clowes cleared 1.50m in the high jump.
