Tom Daley wins World Championship individual bronze in Kazan

TOM DALEY won a bronze medal in the 10m platform event at the World Championships in Kazan.

The Plymothian scored 537.95 points to finish behind China’s Qiu Bo and American Olympic champion David Boudia.

It was Daley’s second medal of the championships, having won a team gold with Leeds’ Rebecca Gallantree earlier in the week.

Daley, 2009 world champion, had to dig deep in Sunday’s individual final after his opening two dives left him down in ninth. He scored 84.80 for his first effort and then just 70.20 for his second, but then all his dives were over 90 points and he finished with a stunning 102.60.

Daley, who won Olympic bronze in 2012, said: “I’m really with that bronze because I did make it as hard as possible for myself with that second dive.

“But I’ve learned to persevere, stick at it and keep going because you never know what can happen in competitions.

“It came down to the last dive when we were on the same score but I quite like that competition pressure – I find it fun.”

He added: “There was a lot more I could have done points-wise.

“It’s interesting to see the same three people on the podium today as at London 2012. It looks like we’ve still got it and we just need to shuffle around for next year and hopefully I can end up on top.”
