Runners ready for Cornwood 10k Challenge

Peter MonaghanTHE Cornwood 10k Challenge takes place on Saturday evening (6.30pm).

The race, which starts and finishes in the village square, takes runners around Cornwood and Lutton.

Last year 138 athletes completed the event, but organisers are hoping for a bigger field this time around. Entries are available on the evening.

Torbay AC’s veteran star Peter Monaghan (pictured) edged out Erme Valley Harriers’ Allister Bristow and Owen Parkin for the 2014 title.

The men’s course record of 34 minutes and 41 seconds, held by Jim Cole, has stood since 2006. The women’s best time of 41 minutes and 40 seconds, however, was only set two years ago by Emma Lake.

As well as the main race there will also be a 4km fun run for under-16s and families.

Meanwhile, the region’s junior athletics side, Team DC, can seal the Midlands Premier Youth Development League upper age category title on Sunday at Mountain Ash, Wales.

The side, made up of under-17 and under-20 athletes from Devon and Cornwall, have a four point lead at the top of the table after three out of four matches.

Team DC, who have won all three of their fixtures so far, just need to avoid finishing in the bottom two in Wales to seal the crown.
