Leander swimmer Atkinson wins two golds on first day of Island Games

atkinsonPLYMOUTH Leander’s Charlotte Atkinson claimed two gold medals on the opening day of swimming at the Island Games in Jersey.

The Plymouth College pupil, who competed at last year’s Commonwealth Games and Youth Olympic Games, claimed victory in the 100m butterfly before then helping the Isle of Man to success in the 4x50m freestyle relay.

Atkinson totally dominated her individual butterfly event. She was three seconds faster than anyone else in the heats and then won the final by more than two seconds in a Games record time.

The 18-year-old clocked 59.31 seconds to win, with Jersey’s Olivia Rose Pollard second in 1:01.63 and Faroe Islands’ Astrio Foldarskaro third in 1:02.76. Former Plymouth College pupil Lara Butler, competing for the Cayman Islands, was fifth.

Atkinson then swam the first leg of the sprint relay, which Isle of Man won in 1:47.07 which was 0.33 seconds faster than the Faroe Islands in second.
