PLYMOUTH Leander’s Ben Proud has been named in Great Britain’s team for this summer’s World Championships in Kazan.
Proud won the 50m butterfly and freestyle events and came second in the 100m freestyle final at the recent British Championships. However, he was outside the tough automatic individual GB qualifying times for Kazan.
But as Britain’s fastest sprint freestyle swimmer this year, the double Commonwealth Games champion is required for the GB relay teams, who have an opportunity to qualify spots at next year’s Rio Olympic Games.
It will be Proud’s second World Championships, having competed in Barcelona in 2013. Joining him in the 30-strong squad is former Leander swimmer Calum Jarvis and Exeter’s Liam Tancock.
Proud’s Leander team-mates Ruta Meilutyte and Mindaugas Sadauskas were earlier this week named in Lithuania’s party for the World Championships, while young city colleagues Tom Fannon, Joe Hulme and Laura Stephens were selected for the Team GB squad for June’s European Games.
