CITY of Plymouth and Tavistock AC both had athletes claiming top three finishes at the second Westward Cross Country League meeting of the season at Newquay on Sunday.
City of Plymouth’s Evie Welsh won the under-11 race for the second year running at the Tretherras Road venue in Cornwall.
She once again edged out Tavistock AC’s Olivia Walkerdine for victory at the Newquay event, that doubled as the Cornwall County Championships. Walkerdine finished well to take second.
City of Plymouth’s Evie Bolt was fifth, Tavistock’s Harriet Silvester was seventh, with Plymouth’s Theia Jones and Genevieve Stone eighth and ninth respectively.
Tavistock AC’s Thomas Hennessey dug deep in the final 100m to claim second place in the boys’ under-15 race. He had won the under-13 event the previous year at the same venue. His team-mate Eldon Young (7th) also made the top 10 on Sunday in the under-15 race.
There was also a second placed finish overall for City of Plymouth’s Elsie Goodspeed in the under-15 girls’ event.
Team-mate Finley Eales claimed third place in the under-13 boys’ race, with club colleagues Lucas Sweeney fourth and Sebastian Travers sixth as they once again won the team event.
City of Plymouth had four finishers in the top 10 of the under-13 girls’ race. Daisy Elliot came fourth, Jennifer Merrifield seventh, Ava Buxton ninth and Florence Zinn 10th.
There was also a fourth place for Erme Valley Harriers’ Luke Hayes in the under-17 boys’ race, with City of Plymouth’s Benjamin Marriott sixth, East Cornwall Harriers’ Jack White eighth and Tavistock’s Reuben Sebag-Montefiore 10th.
Another athlete to finish fourth was City of Plymouth’s Annabel Arnold in the senior women’s race, which was won by Cornwall AC’s Anna Harrold. Erme Valley Harriers’ Faith Taylor-Tippett was first F35.
The senior men’s race was dominated by Cornwall AC athletes. The top Armada runner was Tavistock AC’s Ben Neale, who came 16th. Plymouth Harriers’ Johnny Gilby also made the top 20 and was third M45.
In the junior races there were top 10 finishes for Erme Valley’s Arthur Nicolson in the under-11 boys’ event and Tavistock’s Claudia Jones in the under-17 race, which once again was run with the senior women and under-17 men.
