Evans-Shields and Summers earn England U20 call-ups, while Maczugowski smashes his PB at Bedford

CITY of Plymouth athletes Nubia Evans-Shields and Rory Summers have been selected to represent England at under-20 level this month.

The pair will compete at the Home Countries U20 International at Thames Valley Athletic Centre on August 17.

UK junior number one Evans-Shields, who has already earned Great Britain and England under-20 honours this season, will compete for England’s Team One in the discus, while Summers will compete in the 4x400m for England’s Team Two. It will be Summers’ international debut.

Not all events are included for both sexes on the condensed programme, which has meant some other athletes from the region have not had the chance to be selected.

Meanwhile, City of Plymouth’s Nicolas Maczugowski, who has already represented England at age group level and has won medals at the last two English Schools’ Track & Field Championships, smashed his 400m hurdles personal best at the weekend.

Maczugowski clocked a speedy 53.22 seconds at the National Athletics League Promotion and Cup Final match at Bedford, where he was competing for his higher claim club Cardiff Archers.

That time was 0.79 seconds faster than he had run before for the one lap hurdles event and moves him up to fourth in the UK under-20 rankings in his first year at that age group.
