GALLERY: Athletes impress at county championship events at Exeter and Par

ATHLETES from the region broke county championship records at Exeter and Par at the weekend.

At the Devon County Championships at Exeter, City of Plymouth’s Annabelle Fasuba, Nicolas Maczugowski and Rory Summers and Tavistock’s Phoebe Milburn were among those to break new records, while a host of other athletes set new impressive personal bests.

Rising sprint star Fasuba set two new competition records in the under-15 girls’ 100m and 200m.

She clocked 12.11 seconds for the 100m, which was just 0.02 of a second off the mark she has run at the same venue the week before at the South West League which took her to the top of the UK rankings and broke City of Plymouth’s club record.

She also set a new championship record in the 200m, clocking 25.03 seconds. That was a new PB for her and is just 0.03 of a second off a club record that has stood for 40 years.

Maczugowski broke the under-20 men’s 400m hurdles record with a new PB of 54.01 seconds.

He later ran the 400m flat, where he pushed his team-mate Summers to a new championship record time of 49.14 seconds.

Milburn’s record came in the under-20 hammer where she threw 47.50m to take the win ahead of her Tavistock team-mate Ella Patterson, who set a new PB with a throw of 42.53m and Louise Hess with 39.92m. Milburn also won the under-20 shot.

In the under-17 girls’ hammer, Tavistock’s English Schools’ champion Tegan Brown smashed her PB by more than three metres with a 49.03m throw.

UK number one under-20 discus thrower Nubia Evans-Shields (City of Plymouth) eased to another county title with a 40.14m effort, with Patterson second.

Tavistock’s Owen Fileman won both the under-20 men’s discus (39.01m) and shot (11.26m PB), while City of Plymouth’s Chloe Edwards and Zoe Crutchley won the women’s shot (12.00m) and hammer (31.64m), respectively.

Plymouth’s Adam Dingley set a new PB of 11.42 seconds to win the under-20 men’s 100m, while team-mate Toby Clayden won the senior men’s 100m flat (11.43) and 110m hurdles (16.35).

Tavistock’s Joe Wake set new PBs in both the under-17 100m and 200m events. He clocked 11.53 seconds to win the 100m and 23.23 seconds to take silver on a photo finish in the 200m, where both the top two had the same time.

There was a 200m PB for City of Plymouth’s Hanna Ulvede as she won the women’s 200m in 25.66 seconds. She also won the 400m in 59.25 seconds, while team-mate Nia Harradine-Cole clocked 41.88 seconds to finish second in the under-17 girls’ 300m.

Tavistock’s Caleb Gifford-Groves smashed his PB by more than three seconds to win the under-17 boys’ 800m in 1:58.83.

City of Plymouth’s Dan Newman won the men’s 800m in 2:01.35, while club colleague Molly Shorey ran a PB to finish second in the under-20 women’s 800m with a 2:16.91 run. Elsie Goodspeed was another to PB in the 800m. She clocked 2:26.32 to take second in the under-15 girls’ race.

Tavistock’s Thomas Hennessey set a new best mark to take the under-15 boys’ 1,500m title in 4:32.10, while Finley Eales won the under-13 boys’ crown over the same distance in 5:08.81. Eales also won gold in the 200m in 28.55 seconds.

Plymouth University’s Zechariah Cohen came agonisingly close to winning and setting a new championship record in the men’s 3,000m. It looked like he was going to win but was just pipped on the line by Exeter University’s Hugo Hewitt, who did break the record. Cohen, though, did get a PB of 8:37.79.

Erme Valley’s Luke Hayes won the under-17 boys’ 3,000m in 9:32.77, while in hot conditions team-mate Matthew Gilvear was first under-20 in the 5,000m in 15:55.56.

Tavistock’s Adam Holland competed in the 5,000m and was first M35 having earlier in the day won the Exeter Marathon in two hours, 37 minutes and 31 seconds. Club colleague Sam Lake was first F45 and second woman in the 5,000m.

Erme Valley’s Isabella Trowell enjoyed a good day at Exeter. She won the under-17 80m hurdles in a PB time of 12.99 seconds, won the 300m hurdles in 50.34 seconds and set a new PB of 10.62m to take silver in a competition triple jump final.

In the same under-17 girls’ triple jump, Tavistock’s Katelyn Milburn also set a new PB of 10.56m to finish third, while she also set a new best of 5.00m to claim silver in the long jump.

In the senior men’s 400m hurdles, City of Plymouth’s Matthew Sumner took victory in 58.23 seconds, while UK number one over-50, Neal Edwards, won the masters event in 61.78 seconds. Edwards also ran 25.45 seconds in the 200m, which ranks him third nationally in his age group.

City of Plymouth’s Finley Squires won the 2,000m steeplechase in a PB time of 7:11.72, while team-mate Ella Isaias claim victory in the women’s high jump.

Meanwhile, at the Cornwall County Championships in Par, City of Plymouth’s Poppy Northcott set a new record to win the under-20 400m hurdles.

Northcott clocked a PB time of 63.5 seconds, which ranks her fourth nationally in her first year in the under-20 age group. She also won the under-20 200m in 25.9 seconds.

Club team-mate Jacob Lamboll won the men’s 200m in 22.5 seconds, while he came third in a strong men’s 400m race, where Tavistock’s Joe Wheeler took silver in 50.1 seconds.

Plymouth’s Lamara Hammoudeh enjoyed a good championships at Par. She won the under-13 girls’ 100m in 14.0 seconds, the 200m in 29.9 seconds and the long jump with a PB of 4.36m.

Tavistock’s Charlotte Doney was also a multi gold medallist. She won the under-17 girls’ 300m in 43.9 seconds and the discus with 28.29m, while Isabelle Doney won the under-15 discus event with 23.97m.

Tavistock’s Jed Hutchings took the under-20 men’s 3,000m title in 8:51.5 minutes, while Barnaby Hutchings was first under-17 in 9:26.2.

Tavistock team-mate Jasmine Gray won the women’s 800m in 2:21.8, while Plymouth’s Lucas Sweeney was second in the under-13 1,500m with a PB time 5:16.9.
