WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Argyle edged out by Cardiff, but Marine Academy and Saltash end the year on a high

PLYMOUTH Argyle dropped down to 10th in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division on Sunday after a 2-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Cardiff City at Coach Road.

Argyle had taken the lead in the 34th minute when talented youngster Mia Endacott fired home.

But just six minutes later Cardiff equalised with a goal from Grace Horrell.

The Pilgrims started the second half well but were thrawted by some good saves by visiting goalkeeper Laura O’Sullivan.

And in the 73rd minute Cardiff snatched the win with a second goal from Hurrell.

The Welsh side’s victory has moved them one place above Argyle, but both teams have the same number of points and both are five clear of the relegation zone.

In the South West Women’s League Premier Division, Marine Academy Plymouth will start 2024 in second place after they beat Liskeard Athletic 2-0 away on Sunday to complete the double over their nearest rivals.

The match was 0-0 at half-time, but two second-half goals by Amy Pridham secured Marine Academy the three points.

In the South West Western Division, Saltash United end the year in fine style with a 7-1 away victory at Bideford.

Yas Franklin netted four goals for the Ashes, with Nicola Champion bagging two and Nicola Symons also finding the net.

Saltash will start the new year in third place in the table.
