Armada athletes impress at BMC Meeting in Exeter

THERE were some impressive performances from Armada athletes at the BMC Meeting at Exeter on Tuesday evening.

Tamar Trotters’ Mike Wilsmore and Tavistock AC’s Thomas Hennessey both clocked times that ranked them second in their UK age categories, while a host of other athletes set new personal bests.

Wilsmore won the men’s A 1,5000m in 3:55.01. That is the second fastest time by a UK male over-35 athlete.

In the same race, his Tamar Trotters’ team-mate Jacob Landers enjoyed a rare outing on the track, clocking a PB time of 4:09.77. He had not run a competitive 1,500m race since under-17 level.

Tavistock College’s Hennessey, who is an under-13 athlete, clocked a quick 4:32.36 to finish third in the B 1,500m.  That knocked eight seconds off his previous best and only one other under-13 in the country – Blackburn’s Jack Baranowski – has run quicker. Hennessey now has an eight second gap between himself and the third fastest athlete in the UK rankings.

His older Tavistock team-mate Fynn Baker (U17) won the B race in a PB time of 4:28.97. That was four seconds quicker than he had run before.

The C race was won by another Tavistock junior athlete Connor Duffin (U15), who clocked a PB of 4:46.48.

Tavistock athletes packed well in that race, with Oliver Houlberg (U17) clocking 4:49.45, Reuben Sebag-Montefiore (U15) 4:53.01 and Noah Reid (U17) 4:53.87, while Lara Dix, who was second U17 girl in a PB time of 5:08.29.

In the 800m, Tavistock’s Emma Ryder set a season’s best time of 2:12.40 to finish third in a strong women’s A race.

City of Plymouth’s Verity Tank won the women’s B race in 2:26.39, with Tavistock’s Nell Maguire (U15) third in a PB of 2:31.14. Lamorna Cox and Anya McAulay (both U15) were not far behind in 2:33.75 and 2:33.83, respectively.

City of Plymouth teenager Gregor Norster came second in the men’s A 800m in 1:59.71, with team-mate Matt Bradley (M35) clocking 2:06.26 in a different heat and Tavistock’s Alistair Peers (M40) 2:18.55.

Tavistock College had taken a team to the meeting as a school trip.

As well as the BMC Meeting there was also an Exeter Harriers’ open meeting on the same night.

Tavistock AC’s Joe Wheeler (U20) ran a season’s best time of 50.78 seconds to finish second overall and first in his age category in the 400m.

Team-mate Annebelle Hess (U20) was first female in the 400m in 64.42 seconds.
