THERE is a bit of late season rugby around today for those looking for a last fix before the summer.
At club level, Devon West champions Plymouth Argaum are playing a double-header at Bickleigh Down against touring sides Pontlanfraith from Wales and Somerset outfit St Bernadettes.
The action will start at 2pm and Argaum have said guest players are welcome.
Ivybridge’s women are also in action as they host Cornwall RFU at Cross-in-Hand (1pm).
Cornwall were keen for the game ahead of their Gill Burns County Championship Division Two semi-final next weekend against either Kent or Hampshire.
Cornwall did include Ivybridge players Amy Bunt, Megan Okey and Katherine Wherry and Plymstock Albion Oaks’ Jo Roberts and Roberta Smith-Scotland in their opening County Championship 57-0 win over Oxfordshire.
Ivybridge and Plymstock have also provided Devon women’s team with players that have helped them reach the Gill Burns County Championships Division Three final thanks to a 56-5 home win over Middlesex and a 60-15 victory away at Dorset & Wiltshire last weekend.
Ivybridge’s Liv Verner had her goal-kicking boots on last weekend in the big win over Dorset & Wilts, while Oaks’ Zelah Morgan was among the try scorers, as was former Devonport Services junior Sammie Harris, who now plays for Newton Abbot. Devon women’s final is scheduled for June 4.
Devon and Cornwall’s men’s teams are also in action today in their final group games of the Bill Beaumont County Championship.
In Division One, reigning champions Cornwall face a winner-takes-all home game against Kent at Camborne (2pm).
Both counties sit on nine points in the south pool, with two wins out of two, and so whoever secures victory at Camborne will play in the final at Twickenham.
Cornwall’s side includes former Plymouth Albion backs Matt Shepherd and Fraser Honey.
Devon, meanwhile, host Gloucestershire at Brickfields in Division Two (2pm).
Devon’s men have had mixed fortunes in their opening two games. They snatched a 17-15 away win at Berkshire in their opening game, but last week were beaten 66-0 away at Dorset & Wiltshire.
OPMs’ Billy Garratt has been Devon’s vice-captain this season. He starts again against Gloucestershire, while Ivybridge’s Jacob Winter lines up at hooker, with his club team-mate Adam Northcott among the replacements.
The Plymouth Combination should have been playing Torbay Sharks this weekend, but the match has been moved to next Sunday at Teignmouth.
