PLYMOUTH Argyle will be playing in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division next season after beating Milton Keynes Dons 3-0 at Manadon on Sunday.
The Pilgrims knew they needed to win to guarantee their status for another year and they produced an impressive display to beat their fifth-placed visitors.
Georgia Wilson gave them the lead in the first half before Zoe Cunningham guaranteed the three points with two second half goals.
In the end, Argyle would have stayed up anyway as their relegation rivals Bridgwater United lost 4-0 against London Bees.
It capped a good weekend for the Pilgrims, with the men’s team winning promotion to the Championship the day before.
In the South West Women’s Premier Division, Liskeard Athletic were beaten 3-2 at home to Sherborne Town, but they nearly did produce a remarkable comeback.
Cornwall Cup champions Liskeard were reduced to 10 players in the first half after Gabi Alphous was sent off for two yellow cards and visitors took a 3-0 half-time lead.
But Liskeard, who are guaranteed to finish fifth, really made a game of it second half with Amy Hemingway and Sam Reid pulling goals back.
In the South West Western Division, champions Marine Academy Plymouth beat Saltash United 4-0 at Kimberley Stadium.
Lily Hamp fired Marine Academy ahead in the 12th minute, but the rest of the first half was quite even.
However, the visitors took control after the interval with Rebekah Rose bagging a second and then captain Sam Drewery netting twice – one direct from a corner.
In the Devon Women’s League South & West Division, leaders Plympton kept up their push for the title with a 2-1 evening victory over Lakeside at Bull Point.
Lois Igalawuye and Sam Metters scored for Plympton, with Rebecca Richards firing in for Lakeside.
Signal Box were also 2-1 winners. They overcame Plainmoor at Weston Mill thanks to goals from Maya Felgate and Melanie Finch.
In the same division, Hunters District were beaten 22-0 at home by title-chasing Juventus Devon Bianconer.
In the Cornwall League Supplementary Cup, Saltash Borough enjoyed a big 6-0 away win over Padstow United. Melanie McGregor bagged a hat-trick to go with other goals from Molly Gill, Sophie Perrin and Abby Shapland.
In Cornwall Division Two, Callington Town lost 4-1 away at Penryn. Celia Davis netted for Callington.
