GALLERY: Battershill sets new 1,500m PB as Tavistock’s Kelly wins August’s Armada Summer 5k

ERME Valley Harriers’ steeplechase star Will Battershill showed his flat speed improvement on Wednesday night by smashing his 1,500m personal best at the BMC Gold Standard Meeting in Watford.

Battershill clocked 3:41.80 to finish fifth in a top-quality race won by recent Commonwealth Games finalist and Olympian Elliot Giles.

It was Battershill’s first 1,500m race for five years and his previous best was 3:57.84.

Battershill has enjoyed an impressive 12 months, representing Great Britain at the European Cross Country Championships and winning both the BUCS cross country and steeplechase titles. He also set a new 3,000m steeplechase PB of 8:31.89 at the Trond Mohn Games in Norway in June and came fourth at the British Championships in Manchester.

Meanwhile, Tavistock AC’s Nikki Kelly (pictured top of the page) showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels as she took overall victory in August’s Armada Summer 5k Series run at Saltram House on Wednesday evening.

Kelly produced a dominant run to clock 18.37 minutes in hot conditions on the tricky multi-terrain course.

Second home was Storm’s Daniel Westlake, who just out-sprinted Pete Waumsley in the closing stages. Westlake clocked 18.59 minutes, with Waumsley third in 19.00.

Fourth overall and second woman was Storm’s Lauren Knox, who clocked 20.13 minutes, with Plymouth Harriers’ Andy Charles fifth in 20.20. Kirstie Prowse was third woman home in 21.26 minutes.
