ATHLETICS: King wins in California, while Gilby is first home in Armada 5k

CITY of Plymouth’s international hurdler David King continued his build up for the summer by claiming victory at the Sound Running Track Meeting in San Juan Capistrano, California.

King rang a season’s best time of 13.52 seconds for the 110m hurdles, albeit it wind-assisted, at the World Athletics Continental Bronze Tour event.

He showed good consistency at the meeting by also running 13.54 seconds in his two rounds.

The Olympian is due to be among the field at next week’s Müller Diamond League meeting in Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Plymouth Harriers’ Johnny Gilby produced a dominant run at the second Armada Summer 5k Series run of the season at Saltram House on Wednesday night.

Gilby came home in 16.38 minutes, which was over a minute ahead of anyone else.

Second home was Plymouth Musketeers’ Ross Macdonald, who clocked 17.46 minutes, just days after running the Saltash Half Marathon.

Storm Plymouth’s Daniel Westlake was third home in 18.25, with City of Plymouth’s Isaac Lamerton fourth in 18.35.

Tavistock’s Charlotte Walker had a good run, finishing fifth overall and first female in 19.24 minutes.

Just four seconds behind was Erme Valley Harriers’ Cleo Perry, who clocked 19.28.

Fellow Erme Valley runner Emma Lake was third female in 21.22 seconds, with youngsters Phoebe Timson (City of Plymouth, 22.03) and Isabella Trowell (Erme Valley, 22.12) fourth and fifth, respectively.
