Plymouth Leander end Glasgow Open Meet on a high

PLYMOUTH Leander enjoyed a good end to British Swimming’s Glasgow Open Meet.

Laura Stephens had already won the 200m butterfly event in an Olympic consideration time and Ben Proud had taken victory in the men’s 50m freestyle.

But the club added two more medals on the final day.

Former world champion Proud took the 50m butterfly title in 23.65 seconds, while there was an impressive silver medal for teenager Beatrice Varley in the women’s 400m freestyle.

Varley, who had also made the finals of the 200m and 400m IM on the opening two days, clocked 4:16.83 to finish behind Great Britain international Holly Hibbott.

Varley also reached the B final of the 100m freestyle on the last day of the meeting, along with Mount Kelly’s Erin Little, who came second, and Leander’s Sophie Freeman.

Freeman also reached the final of the 50m butterfly on Sunday, finishing fifth in 28.40 seconds, with Maisie Elliott eighth.

Plymouth’s Adam Chllingworth just missed out on a medal in a strong men’s 200m breaststroke final. He finished fourth behind James Wilby, Ross Murdoch and Greg Butler in 2:13.90.
