PLYMOUTH FIJI turned on the style to take victory in Devonport Services’ Invitation Sevens Tournament on Saturday.
Services hastily arranged the social six-team event after the Plymouth Combination Sevens was postponed due to a shortage of referees.
Sixteen teams had been due to take part in the annual Combination competition, but that will now be held in August instead.
The mini event Services put on saw them enter two teams, along with Plymouth Fiji, while Saltash and the Peninsula Medical School also took part.
The Fiji B team ended up with 12 points to take the overall win. Devonport C and Fiji A came joint second with nine points, Saltash were fourth with six points and the Medics and Devonport A came joint fifth with three points.
Devonport Services’ head coach Mike Lewis said it was a good day.
“I really enjoyed it,” he said. “It just shows the appetite for rugby in the area is great, as at such short notice we managed to cobble a few teams together and make a great day of it.
“Everyone chipped in when teams were short of a player or two and every game was played in the spirit you would expect.
“Every team also won a few games which always helps the enjoyment levels.”
