Plymouth to host British Championships in Olympic year

THE country’s best divers will once again return to Plymouth in 2020 after the city was chosen to host the British Championships.

The Life Centre has become a regular base for Britain’s top diving events over the last six years.

As well as the senior British Championships over the weekend of January 24-26, Plymouth will also host the 2020 British Elite Junior Championships on the weekend of April 6-8.

The January event will be the first chance for divers to stake a claim for a place on the Great Britain team for the Olympics. The likes of Tom Daley (pictured), Jack Laugher, Lois Toulson, Grace Reid and Plymouth’s Matthew Dixon are expected to be among the star names competing.

Plymouth City Council’s deputy leader Pete Smith said: “We’re so pleased to be hosting the British Diving Championships in Plymouth again, especially during such a big year for the city and with all eyes on Tokyo in the summer.

“This reaffirms the Plymouth Life Centre as a top venue for these events and we’re sure to see some first class diving displays.”

Julian Egan, Everyone Active’s contract manager in Plymouth, said: “We are all excited to be welcoming the country’s top divers to Plymouth once again. We’re honoured that the Life Centre has been selected to host two prestigious events in the 2020 domestic diving calendar.

“It’s great for our divers to be able to compete locally and we’re looking forward to seeing them challenging for medals. It promises to be a fantastic weekend of competition and I would encourage everyone to come down to cheer on our local divers.”
