CITY of Plymouth’s Molly Shorey and Tavistock Run Project’s Oliver Smart both won silver medals at the opening 2019-20 British Athletics Cross Challenge event at Llandaff Fields in Cardiff.
Shorey finished second in the under-13 race. Chiltern Harriers’ Zoe Gilbody won in 9.54 minutes, with Shorey clocking 10.08 and Westbury’s Laura Chance taking third in 10.14 minutes.
English Schools’ cross country champion Smart enjoyed a great battle with his Devon and England team-mate Flynn Jennings in the under-17 5.5km race.
Just four seconds separated the pair, who were well ahead of the rest of the field. Bideford’s Jennings clocked 17.12, with Smart finishing in 17.16. Third home was Ashford’s Louis Small in 17.38. Devon actually had three athletes in the top five, with Exeter Harriers’ Johnny Livingstone finishing fifth.
