Plymouth College’s Shorey impresses in athletics qualifier, while Kerr enjoys table tennis success

THREE Plymouth College pupils have qualified to compete at the National Prep Schools’ Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Molly Shorey (Year 7), Ella Patterson (Year 7) and Maggie Haffenden (Year 5) came through the ‘Drake’ regional qualifier. They will now represent Team Drake on July 1.

Shorey will compete in the 1,500m. She broke the record in the qualifier, clocking 4:58 minutes in windy conditions to beat all the other Year 7 and 8 girls and boys. The previous record stood at 5:09.

City of Plymouth athlete Shorey is ranked in the UK’s top 10 at under-13 level at the distance, having clocked 4:54.50 at a meeting in Exeter last month.

Patterson will compete in the discus in Birmingham, while Haffenden will take part in the javelin.

Meanwhile, fellow Plymouth College pupil Gemma Kerr has enjoyed some national table tennis success.

The Year 11 pupil teamed up with Rachel Trevorrow to win the JM Rose Bowl (senior women) for Plymouth at the English Leagues’ Cup Competitions finals in Wellingborough.

Eight teams reached the finals, with Plymouth up against Cambridge, Central London, Leamington, Leicester, North Herts, Staines and Warrington.

Plymouth and Leicester emerged from the group matches to play an excellent exciting final, where Kerr and Trevorrow managed to upset Leicester’s Lois Peake and Karen Smith 3-2.

Leicester were favourites but Plymouth were never behind, taking the lead when Kerr defeated Smith 3-2 (11-6, 11-7, 6-11, 5-11, 11-8). Peake beat Trevorrow 3-0 (12-10, 11-6, 11-6) but Plymouth restored their lead by taking the doubles 3-1 (12-10, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9).

Peake levelled again, but Trevorrow won the trophy for Plymouth as she defeated Smith in four (8-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-9).
