THE region’s up-and-coming mountain bike stars were in action at Newnham Park at the weekend in the inaugural Pilgrim Flyers Youth Stage Race.
The event for under-16s was the first of its kind in the South West.
Competitors took part in three separate events – a skills course, an off-road time-trial and a short cross country race.
The format was designed for riders to improve their skills for inter-regional competitions in the future.
The youth and juvenile categories were particularly strong at Newnham Park.
Pilgrims Flyers’ Rosie Andrews enjoyed success in the youth female category, finishing ahead of Dartmoor Velo’s Connie McLaughlin.
Fellow Flyers’ rider Jack Southcott took victory in the youth male event, with Dartmoor Velo’s Leo White second and another Flyer James McDouall third.
Taw Velo’s Ellen Garnsworthy won the juvenile female section, with Oliver Murphy taking the honours in the juvenile male category, just ahead of Dartmoor’s Jack Cann and Pilgrim Flyers’ Archie Townsend.
Pilgrims’ Molly Lane and Taw Velo’s Louis Garnsworthy triumphed in the under-12 categories, while Annabella MacLennan and Oliver Riches were the winners in the under-10 section, with Lucas Riches taking honours in the under-eights event.
