TAVISTOCK Run Project’s Oliver Smart became South West under-17 cross country champion at Aldon Hill in Yeovil on Sunday.
Smart edged out his Devon team-mate and big rival, Flynn Jennings from Bideford, by four seconds to win the title at the joint club and inter-counties championship event.
With Exeter’s Johnny Livingstone taking fifth spot, Devon easily claimed the county team title. Tavistock AC’s Bradley Stevens was 11th in the same race and helped Cornwall to team silver.
The championships in Yeovil proved successful for the region’s athletes with Erme Valley Harriers’ Cleo Perry, Tavistock AC’s Heather Fell and City of Plymouth’s Madeleine Jones all winning individual medals and a host of others runners from Armada clubs picking up team gongs.
Perry enjoyed an impressive run to win the women’s over-45 title. She finished 10th in the senior women’s race (under-20s not included). She edged out fellow Devon athlete Julie Dixon from Bideford by two seconds to claim gold in her category.
Tavistock AC’s Olympian Fell, 14th in the senior race, took the silver medal in the over-35 section, with Plymouth Harriers’ Ami Yetton fifth.
Thomas Jones also had a good run for Devon in the under-13 boys’ race. The Plymouth athlete finished fifth to help the county to the team title. In the same race Tavistock AC’s Ewan Dix came 15th.
There was a top 10 finish for Plymouth’s Holly Reid in the under-13 girls’ race. She came ninth, with team-mate Verity Tank 12th. Tavistock’s Charlotte Walker also claimed a top 20 finish.
Another Tavistock athlete, Tilly McDowell, representing Cornwall, was in the top 20 in the under-17 girls’ race, as was club team-mate Amelia Riggott in the under-15 event.
In the senior men’s race, Run Project’s Jordan Andrews was 16th (under-20s not included), with Tavistock AC’s Adam Holland 19th. Both were running for Devon, who took silver in the county team event.
In the under-20 race, which was run at the same time as the senior men, Run Project’s Edward Smart finished 10th and helped Devon to team silver.
City of Plymouth’s Oliver Woodmason was in the top 20 in the under-15 race, with Tavistock’s Joe Dix and Will Russell not far behind.
