THE final event of the Winter Soggy Bottom Series took place at Newnham Park on Sunday.

Unlike last month’s race, conditions were dry for the final round and it helped produced some competitive riding.

Tavistock Wheelers’ Leo White and Hot Pursuit/Pilgrim Flyers rider James McDouall continued their good battle in the juvenile boys’ category. McDouall had claimed victory in the last race, but White came back to take the final race on Sunday by nearly 50 seconds. Fellow Tavistock rider Jack Cann was third at the weekend. McDouall, though, took the overall series title with a win and two second places.

Taw Velo’s Ellen Garnsworthy completed a clean sweep in the juvenile girls’ event, while Pilgrim Flyers’ Lottie Eynon and Decoy’s Coby Wrayford did the same in the under-eights section and Lolie Murphy also did the same in the under-10 girls’ competition.

There was a Pilgrim Flyers’ one-two in the under-12 girls’ race, with Molly Lane winning and Grace Ward taking second, while in the under-12 boys’ event, Max Standen won, with Taw Velo’s Louis Garnsworthy second.

Pilgrim Flyers’ Helen Barron took victory in the women’s race, finishing six minutes ahead of Minehead’s Alicia Hocking.

Fellow Pilgrim Flyer Rosie Andrews won the youth girls’ event, with Jason Lee taking in the boys’ race in the same age group.

There was a good men’s race with James Porter taking honours ahead of Southfork’s Ed Welsh, who had won in December. Third place went to Plymouth Corinthians’ Stephen Hodge, with Pilgrim Flyers youngster Oli Allen fourth.

Mike Tomlinson was first veteran, with Donald MacGregor taking the grand vet prize and Vicky Percival winning the grand vet women’s race.
