Cricket club will celebrate their 70th anniversary on Sunday

OLD Suttonians Cricket Club will celebrate their 70th anniversary on Sunday with a special match at Mount Wise (1.30pm).

The club have invited former players to attend to play a chairman’s XI against a club XI.

Old Sutts are keeping their fingers crossed that Normal Holberton, who played in their first match back in 1948, might be able to attend.

“We are hoping to have a host of former players turn up,” said secretary Paul Blank.

One ex-player expected for the special occasion is Callum Whittaker, who played for Old Sutts when he was 15 years-old before going on to play for Plymouth and Devon.

The club opted never to join the Devon League but play regular Sunday fixtures.

“We play near every Sunday,” said Blank. “I think we had 18 fixtures pencilled in for this year.

“At one time we used to play on Saturdays and Sundays.”

The club have been nomads since 1984, playing most of their games away. However, they do use Plymouth Cricket Club’s Mount Wise ground when they can.

As well as Sunday’s anniversary match, the club will hold an anniversary dinner at The Dome on September 15.
