PLYMOUTH Leander swimmer Ben Proud claimed two gold medals on Saturday evening at the Luxembourg Euro Meet.
The Great Britain star’s first win came in the 50m butterfly final – the event where he is world champion.
Proud showed impressive early season form to clock a meet record time of 23.02 seconds. He beat big rival Andriy Govorov of the Ukraine, who took second with a 23.20 swim.
The former Plymouth College pupil then came back into the pool and won the 50m freestyle event in another meet record. He clocked 21.89 seconds for the ‘splash-and-dash’.
Germany’s Damian Wierling and Japan’s Shinri Shioura took joint second in 22.26 seconds.
Proud’s Leander and Great Britain team-mate Tom Fannon also reached the 50m freestyle A final. He finished eighth in 22.92 seconds.
Fellow Leander swimmer Laura Stephens continued her good recent form in Luxembourg. She came fourth in the women’s 200m butterfly in 2:12.73 and sixth in the 50m butterfly in 27.50 seconds.
In the longer event, she enjoyed a good battle with fellow British swimmers Charlotte Atkinson and Hannah Miley.
Former Plymouth College pupil Atkinson took third in 2:11.52, with Miley behind Stephens in fifth in a time of 2:14.04.
Atkinson also claimed bronze in the 50m butterfly event, which was won by world record holder Sarah Sjoestroem.
Plymouth Leander’s Madelyn Moore reached the women’s 50m freestyle B final on Saturday, where she finished fifth with a 26.52 second swim.
