TAVISTOCK athletes Oliver Smart and Tilly McDowell both claimed county titles at the weekend.
Smart, running for Mount Kelly College, triumphed in the intermediate boys’ race at the Devon Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Stover, while Callington Community College’s McDowell won the intermediate girls’ event at the Cornwall Schools’ Championships at Newquay.
McDowell was one of four Callington Community College pupils to finish in the top eight of the intermediate girls’ race at Newquay.
Grace Davidson finished third, with Isy Aspen seventh and Lily McGowan eighth as the school won the team prize.
There were also top eight finishes at the Cornwall championships for fellow Callington pupils Bradley Stevens, Jacob Thomas-Hegarty, Tyler Gregory and Charli Dawson.
At Stover, Smart continued his good form to claim his first Devon Schools’ crown. He beat Bideford’s Flynn Jennings by nine seconds.
There were also top three places for Ivybridge Community College pupils Krystina Cade, Thomas Jones and Joe Battershill and Devonport High School for Girls’ Emily Cornish.
Cade and Cornish came second and third in the junior girls’ race, while Battershill took second in the senior boys’ race, with Jones finishing third in the minor boys’ competition.
Mount Kelly’s Natasha Farrington, Nicole Dunn, Euan Botham and Tom Brew all claimed top eight finishes, as did Ivybridge Community College’s Seren English, April Oakshott and Emily Oakshott and Tavistock Community College’s William White, Will Rusell and Joe Dix.
