Plymouth fencer Andrews moves into Europe’s top 10 after impressing in Turkey

PLYMOUTH fencer Ben Andrews has moved into Europe’s top 10 after impressing at a recent event in Turkey.

The Great Britain international is now ranked seventh in the under-17 age group after finishing fifth at the Turkish Fencing Federation EFC ranking competition in Antalya this month.

The event, held at the renowned Antalya Arena, attracted not only the host nation’s top epeeists but also competitors from far as afield as Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Qatar.

Plymouth College pupil Andrews, having travelled independently to the competition, won all six of his pool fights to progress.

In a tactically fought final match, Andrews came from five points down to win 15-13 against the top-seeded Turkish fencer to take fifth place.

Andrews is now preparing for Great Britain’s first nominated international event of the 2017-18 season which takes place in Klagenfurt, Austria, at the end of this month.
