THERE was a bumper turnout for the annual Tavistock Relays on Thursday evening.

The event, which forms part of the Tavistock Carnival, has been on the running calendar now for 31 years.

When it was first organised, athletes would run down Plymouth Road, but now the relays take place in the safe environment of Meadows Park.

This year the organisers held a separate women’s only race to be able to increase the number of teams, which consist of four athletes each running 1.1 miles.

There were four races in total – a kids’ fun run, followed by the junior relays, then the women’s race and finally the men’s/mixed event.

Many of the region’s top athletes took part, with some fast individual and team times.

There were also plenty of social quartets and other sporting teams, including swimming and rugby clubs.
