Leander’s Meilutyte and Proud win medals on final day of Mare Nostrum event

PLYMOUTH Leander swimmers Ruta Meilutyte and Ben Proud won medals on the final day of the Mare Nostrum event in Barcelona.

Olympic champion Meilutyte claimed her second gold of the weekend in the women’s 100m breaststroke event.

The Plymouth College pupil clocked 1:06.00 to win by nearly two seconds. Second place went to Great Britain’s Chloe Tutton, who clocked 1:07.74.

Meilutyte had won the 50m event the day before with a 29.98 second swim.

Meanwhile, Proud took silver in Sunday’s 50m freestyle final.

The University of St Mark and St John student clocked 21.85 seconds which was his 20th sub-22 second swim of his career.

Ukraine’s Andrij Govorov won in a meet record time of 21.61 seconds.
