PLYMOUTH Leander will be well represented when the swimming events get underway at the European Championships in London on Monday morning.

Laura Stephens, Ana-Maria Damjanovska, Tom Fannon, Kregor Zirk and Commonwealth games champion Ben Proud will all be in action on the opening day.

Plymouth College pupils Stephens, competing for Great Britain, and Damjanovska, swimming for Macedonia, will go in the heats of the women’s 50m butterfly, while their school colleagues Great Britain’s Fannon and Estonian Kirk will go in the men’s version of the same event, alongside Proud.

Proud, British record holder in the event and ranked second in the world this year, will go in the fifth heat of seven and will swim next to France’s former world 50m freestyle record holder Frederick Bousquet.

Youngster Kirk finds himself in the seventh heat alongside current 200m world champion Hungarian Laszlo Cseh.

The semi-finals of the 50m butterfly events will take place on Monday evening with the finals on Tuesday night.

Former Plymouth College pupil Joe Hulme will swim the 100m backstroke for Great Britain on the opening morning.
