PLYMOUTH Leander’s Ruta Meilutyte was unable to defend her World Championship 100m breaststroke title in Kazan.
The 18-year-old Olympic champion and world record holder had to settle for second in Tuesday’s final, with controversial Russian Yuliya Efimova winning in her own country.
Efimova, who served a 16-month ban for failing a drugs test, clocked 1:05.66, with Meilutyte touching in 1:06.36.
Meilutyte was more than two seconds of her own world and championship record.
However, the Plymouth College pupil will get the chance to bounce back in the 50m event.
