Plymouth Albion to play Newton Abbot in final pre-season fixture

PLYMOUTH Albion will play Newton Abbot instead of Hornets RFC in their final pre-season fixture.

The National One side had been due to play Somerset-based side Hornets on Saturday, August 29, but Albion needed to move the game to the Friday evening and the National Three South West outfit could not make it.

However, their league rivals Newton Abbot have agreed to step in and fill the void. The match will take place at Brickfields on Friday, August 28.

Newton Abbot’s director of rugby Roy Henderson said: “We jumped at the fixture when Hornets pulled out as you need a good test in pre-season.”

Henderson expects Albion to field a mix-and-match team for their final fixture before they entertain Richmond at home in their league opener on September 5.

The match could see former Plymouth favourite Colin Stewart play again at Brickfields. The Scottish lock is a player-coach at Newton Abbot.

Albion begin their pre-season programme a week-on-a-Saturday when they travel to Championship side Jersey. They will then entertain Weston-super-Mare and Bedford Blues at Brickfields on August 22.
