Blake and Smith set new 800m PBs to help athletics team to second place

IMG_7299TAVISTOCK’S Joshua Blake lowered his 800m personal best for the second time within a week at Winchester on Saturday.

Blake was running for the joint City of Plymouth, Erme Valley Harriers and Tavistock side that compete in the Southern Athletics League.

The team finished second in their fourth Division Two West match of the season, behind league leaders Harrow.

This weekend’s second-placed finish followed on from two victories in their opening two matches and a third-place finish last month.

Under-20 athlete Blake ran one minute and 54.4 seconds to claim victory in the men’s A 800m. That was nearly half-a-second faster than he had run last weekend at Exeter.

His team-mate Dean Smith also clocked a new PB in the 800m B race, finishing in 1:57.0

The Plymouth side did enjoy plenty of distance success on Saturday.

IMG_8245David Weir claimed the 1,500m A race in 4:11.7, with Chris Williams taking the B heat in 4:14.7.

Matthew Bradley continued his good form in the 3,000m steeplechase, winning in 10:04.3, while Hannah Blair triumphed in women’s 5,000m.

Plymouth completed a double in the women’s 400m, with Hayley Harvey winning the A race in 58.7 and Jodie Allen the B event in 64.1, and the hammer, where Elizabeth Edwards won the A event in 37.86m and Kerry Smith-Wightman the B competition in 37.63.

Aimee-Leigh Clowes was also an A event winning in the high jump.

The team will conclude their Southern League programme on August 15 when they travel to Woking.
