Rome double for Plymouth Leander’s Ruta Meilutyte

PLYMOUTH Leander’s Ruta Meilutyte claimed a second gold medal at the Sette Colli Trophy Meet in Rome.

A day after winning the 100m race in a time of 1:05.68, the 18-year-old world, European and Olympic champion clocked 30.07 seconds to triumph in the 50m event.

Sweden’s Jennie Johansson was second in 30.64, with Netherlands Moniek Nijhuis just one hundredth of a second behind her in third.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Plymouth diver Matthew Dixon on his debut at the European Senior Championships in Rostock.

The teenager missed out on the final of the platform event, finishing 14th in the preliminary round with a score off 315.30, which was well short of his personal best.

However, Dixon will have learned from the experience and will have a chance to bounce back when he competes at the European Games in Baku.
