PLYMOUTH will be well represented at this summer’s inaugural European Games in Baku.
City athletes from the sports of diving, swimming, water polo and fencing have been named in Team GB’s squad, along with the likes of Olympic champions Nicola Adams and Jade Jones.
Cousins Matthew Dixon, 15, and Shanice Lobb, 17, will compete in the diving in Azerbaijan.
Plymouth Leander’s Tom Fannon, 16, Joe Hulme, 17, and 15-year-old Laura Stephens are named in the swimming party after impressing at last week’s British Championships.
Meanwhile, Devonport Royal’s 16-year-old Beth Ward is selected for GB’s water polo squad.
British Swimming have opted to send up-and-coming stars to Baku in June with their World Championships taking place just weeks later in Kazan.
But some sports have picked established names, including fencing, where city Olympian Corinna Lawrence, 24, is selected.
The European Games will take place between June 12-28.
Meanwhile, Plymouth Leander’s Ruta Meilutyte and Mindaugas Sadauskas have been confirmed in Lithuania’s team for the World Championships in Kazan.
