PLYMOUTH Leander enjoyed a great penultimate night in the pool at the British Swimming Championships in London.
The highlight of the evening was the men’s 50m freestyle final where Leander filled three of the top four places.
As expected, British record holder and Commonwealth Games champion Proud won the event to add to the 50m butterfly title and 100m freestyle silver he had already won during the week. He clocked 21.99 seconds for the ‘splash and dash’ race.
However, there was a stunning swim from his 16-year-old team-mate Tom Fannon, who took second in a new age group record of 22.48 seconds.
Fannon edged out Loughborough’s Andrew Weatheritt (22.50) and fellow Leander swimmer Levi Lucas, who was fourth in 22.55.
There was also joy for young Plymouth swimmers Emma England and Laura Stephens.
England, 15, lowered her personal best to take the junior girls’ (EG) final in 26.13, while Stephens came joint first with Stockport’s Holly Hibbott in the same age group category in the 100m butterfly in 1:00.98.
Lily Parsons just missed out on a medal in the junior girls’ (EYOF) 100m butterfly final. She came fourth in 1:05.77.
Plymouth College pupil Charlotte Atkinson reached the senior open 100m butterfly final where she came eighth in 1:00.41.
