WOMEN’S RUGBY: Ivybridge book themselves a Twickenham cup final appearance, while Argaum claim first win

IVYBRIDGE will cap off a dream season by playing in a Twickenham cup final next month.

The unbeaten Cross-in-Hand club had already wrapped up the Championship South West 2 title the other week by beating Launceston 38-0 away.

And they will now play in the RFU Women’s Intermediate Cup final on May 24 after they beat Guildford 55-5 away on Sunday in their semi-final.

Guildford pushed them quite hard in the first half and Ivybridge were only 17-5 ahead at the break, but the visitors well and truly turned on the style after the interval with six further tries to pull away.

Charleigh Hopkins bagged a hat-trick in Surrey, with England international Kelly Taylor touching down twice and Chloe Huxter, Jess Humber, Kat Wherry and Mich Roberts also scoring.

Ivybridge will play Old Albanians Saints II in the Twickenham final with their eyes set on achieving a league and cup double.

Meanwhile, it was also a memorable weekend for Plymouth Argaum, who finally claimed their very first league victory.

Argaum beat Falmouth 44-10 at Bickleigh Down on Sunday in National Challenge (NC) Three South West (West).

The team admitted the win had been ‘a long time coming’ but they were over the moon after finally ending their wait.

Flanker Lakaysha Lomax-Pay claimed a hat-trick of tries, with strong-running centre Evie Leigh touching down twice. There were also scores for scrum-half Vic Stiven, prop Jamie Pay and winger Emily Langdon-Smith. Nikkita Endacott added two conversions in the tough wind at Bickleigh Down.

“It was a long time coming,” said team manager Shelley Smith. “It was very emotional at the end. We’ve worked so hard this season to get that win.”

In the same division, Saltash were beaten 40-10 at home by high-flying Kingsbridge.
