WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Home success for both Plymouth Argyle and Marine Academy

PLYMOUTH Argyle ended their home campaign in fine style on Sunday by beating Oxford United 5-0 at Home Park.

However, the Pilgrims’ faint hopes of winning the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division title ended with Watford beating Gwalia United 3-1 away on the back of a 5-0 home victory over Exeter City.

But Argyle can still bag second place in the table and secure a promotion play-off match against the Northern Premier Division runners-up.

The Pilgrims currently sit in second place with one game to go – an away match at Real Bedford. They are six points ahead of AFC Bournemouth, who do have two games in hand.

The battle for the runners-up spot could go right down to the final game and to goal difference.

Argyle took the lead on Sunday in the 11th minute with a fine finish from Tianna Teisar.

And two goals in the final five minutes of the first half put them well in control.

Arabelle Suttie bagged their second when she turned the ball home from close range following a corner where Teisar and Phoebie Hampson flicked the ball on.

And in first-half injury-time, Paris Dalton made it 3-0 with a back post volley from a Katie Wilson free-kick.

Dalton scored again after the interval when she fired in a stunning long-range effort.

And Rosin Kivel made it 5-0 in the 74th minute when she scored from inside the area.

There was also home joy for Marine Academy Plymouth in the FA Women’s National League Division One South West.

They beat Abingdon United 2-0 at Erme Valley to guarantee their National League status for another season.

Sophie Pearse and Lucy Solloway scored their goals on Sunday.

They are nine points clear of the relegation zone with just two games to go.

Marine Academy will play Moneyfields at home this Sunday before hosting Ascot United on April 26.
