PLYMOUTH Argyle suffered a blow to their title hopes as they were held to a 0-0 draw away at 10th-placed Gwalia United on Sunday in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division.
It was the first time second-placed Argyle had not scored a goal since their 0-0 draw with title-rivals AFC Bournemouth on October 12.
The Pilgrims had their chances in Wales at the weekend but just could not find the net on a frustrating afternoon.
Head coach Marie Hourihan admitted her team were lacking ‘ruthlessness’ in front of goal on Sunday.
“Give Gwalia credit, they did everything we thought they would do. They frustrated us and made it a very much first ball, second ball game and we played into their hands and we got sucked into those traps,” she said afterwards.
“But despite that and not playing anywhere near to our capabilities, we have still created four or five clear opportunities to take this game.”
Marine Academy Plymouth’s FAWNL South West Division One match with Abingdon United was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Ivybridge.
In the South West Women’s Premier Division, Saltash United secured a crucial 1-0 victory away at fourth-placed AEK Boco to move out of the relegation zone.
The Ashes showed really determination to secure the three points in a match moved to the artificial pitch at Keynsham Town.
Nicola Symons scored the winning goal, which has moved them three points clear of the drop zone with three games in hand.
In the Devon Women’s Premier Division, Mia Dulling scored a hat-trick as leaders SB Oak Villa enjoyed a 4-0 home win over Tiverton Town at Manadon.
However, the game was in the balance until the final 15 minutes, when Oak Villa scored three of their goals.
Tiverton did play some good football, but once Oak Villa got their second goal, they were able to pull away. Kelsey Blight scored Villa’s other goal.
In the Devon South & West Division, Elm United enjoyed a 6-0 home victory over Lakeside Athletic at Tor Bridge High.
All other fixtures were postponed.
