Plymouth and Tavistock athletes among the medals at the Devon Schools’ Cross Country Championships

PLYMOUTH & West Devon athletes were among the medal winners at the Devon Schools’ Cross Country Championships in Barnstaple at the weekend.

The event took place at West Buckland School, and this year also featured a primary age group as well as races for Year 7 pupils and above.

City of Plymouth AC runners Evie Bolt (Pomphlet) and Jack Penney (Oreston) convincingly won the primary school races.

Bolt triumphed by 13 seconds, with Chloe Souness (Compton) third and Ivy Ling (Hooe) just one second further behind in fourth.

Penney won by 16 seconds in the primary boys’ race.

Fellow City of Plymouth runners Olivia Walkerdine (Notre Dame) and Margot Goodspeed (DHSG) finished second and third in the Year 7 girls’ event, while Ivybridge Community College’s Arthur Nicolson and DHSB’s Alfie Nicolson achieved exactly the same feat in the same age group boys’ race.

Tavistock AC athletes featured among the leading runners in a strong intermediate boys’ race.

Mount Kelly’s Freddie Whybrow came second behind Colyton’s Oscar Purchase, with his school and club colleague Luke Scott-Tucker third and Tavistock College’s Thomas Hennessey fifth.

In the intermediate girls’ race there was a bronze medal for City of Plymouth and DHSG’s Elsie Goodspeed, while Ivybridge’s Luke Hayes came fifth in the senior boys’ event.

This weekend, Devon will host the South West Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Exeter’s Exhibition Fields.

There will be eight races for Year 7 pupils upwards starting with the minor girls’ race at 12.30pm and finishing with the senior boys’ race at 3pm.
